Best Podcast Accessories – EP 23

In this episode, I’m covering my best podcast accessories. In addition to a mic, to really pull off a good podcast, you’ve got to have a few accessories. These things are going to help you with your workflow and ease the overall production process. As a podcaster, you never know when you might need a piece of equipment. Having a few additional tools can often save a recording before it even starts.

Thanksgiving Week Gratitude

Being that the holidays are here I encourage you all to think about what you’re thankful for. I think so often we think about all the things we don’t have in life, instead of focusing on what we do have. By focusing on gratitude we can shift our mindset, and start living in more abundance. I’m thankful for all my listeners. Thank you for believing in me. My goal is to be a resource to you.

My best podcast accessories are below. Oh, and just as a heads up, I’m an Amazon Affiliate and I may earn a commission if you choose to purchase anything through my links. This doesn’t cost you anything extra, and it helps me keep cranking out content.

Rode PSA 1 Boom Arm

I use my Rode PSA 1 Boom Arm almost daily. I use it for podcasting, but also for Zoom Calls. This arm allows me to be hands-free when I podcast. It clamps onto my desk, swivels 360 degrees, and extends up and down so that I can customize my microphone placement. It’s one of the best boom arms on the market, a killer podcast accessory.

Cloudlifter

A Cloudlifter is a microphone preamp that outputs 25db of clean gain. This is perfect for me because my main podcasting setup is a Shure SM58 mic with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. The SM58 is a dynamic microphone that requires a lot of gain. The Scarlett is a solid audio interface but doesn’t quite have the preamp power I need to crank the SM58 to the level I want, without inducing a little bit of noise. My Cloudlifter gives me the boost, clarity, and richness I want from my recordings.

Sabrent 4 Port USB Hub

It’s not very exciting, but my Sabrent 4 Port USB Hub is one of my favorite podcast accessories. It allows me to connect everything I need to my computer when recording podcasts or editing podcasts. I’ve usually got a hard drive, my Pro Tools iLok, my mouse, and a cable to charge my iPhone, all plugged in at the same time.

When I’m traveling, I need an additional USB input to plug in my Audio-Technica ATR2100x USB microphone. That’s my go-to microphone for recording podcasts on the road.

As you can see, the amount of inputs I need adds up quickly. I’d imagine this is the same for a lot of podcasters. As a content creator, you never know when you’re going to need to connect an accessory. It’s a lifesaver to know you have enough USB ports to power your setup.

Windscreen

I’ve never recorded a podcast without a windscreen. These little babies can save recordings because they help reduce the amount of air that gets pushed into the microphone when breathing or speaking. The windscreens for my microphone are inexpensive, so I buy them in bulk. Check out this pack of them on Amazon.

Manfrotto Tripod

Manfrotto makes some of the best tripods on the market. This is the one that’s always in my bag.

I use this tripod with my phone, for connecting my ring light, connecting my Zoom H6, and even mounting a microphone. It’s built really well, is lightweight, and has a strong presence in my podcasting kit.

Have I ever mentioned that in my work backpack I keep this tripod, my microphone, lights, cables, and other accessories? They pretty much never leave my backpack. I like to know that I can create content anywhere I go.

Lacie Hard Drive

I edit numerous podcasts each week, and the files can build up. I have several Lacie hard drives for podcasting, and for backing up my files. My philosophy is to keep my computer’s hard drive as empty as possible. I do all my work and podcast production on external hard drives. Lacie is reputable. I’ve never had one of their hard drives malfunction. I stand by their products.
